When did “free” stop meaning “free”? We are constantly bombarded with stories of innocent consumers who, in search of a good colon cleansing product, happen upon companies that are pulling off what some customers say is a tiresome scam. The current culprit is Max Colon, distributed and sold by IDS Colon of Rancho Cucamonga, California on the website www.maxcolon.com. Customers say that this alleged copycat colon cleanse scam artist offers a “free trial” in order to lure customers into believing that they can try Max Colon free, paying only $1.95 shipping and handling. Once Max Colon’s marketers have your credit card number, Max Colon’s unhappy customers say an automatic charge of $89.95 is applied, and you are enrolled in an auto shipment program where you are charged this amount each and every month. These charges are revealed in the notoriously small print when customers place their orders. “Free” certainly doesn’t mean what it used to!

While it is hard to speak of the merits of Max Colon (curiously, they fail to list the ingredients of the product on their website), it is equally as difficult to put much faith in a product that is at the center of such an outrageous amount of controversy. Failing to list the active ingredients in Max Colon is not only an odd marketing tactic, it can also be dangerous if the formulation contains ingredients that might interact with unknowing consumer’s medications or allergies. For all the consumer knows, Max Colon is nothing more than an overhyped laxative like so many “cleanses” out there – and an overpriced one at that! Albeit the benefits of colon cleansing are numerous and proven and colon cleansing can be a cornerstone to optimal general overall health, there is simply not enough information about Max Colon available to accurately judge the effectiveness of the product.

Consumers are angry with Max Colon and its marketers, and have begun to fill up complaint boards with everyone from RipOffReport.com to the Better Business Bureau. Many customers claim that Max Colon is just another product marketed by a “fly by night” company (established only February 2009) whose sole purpose is to fraud and fleece the American consumer for all they can.

As mentioned before, it is difficult to discern if Max Colon is an effective colon cleanser. But based on the number of consumer complaints and the nature of the allegations against Max Colon, it is not a huge jump to say that Max Colon’s marketing tactics are nothing short of shady. The website for the product, www.maxcolon.com, features huge icons for such networks as CBS and MSNBC with the heading “Max Colon in the News“ – but the news that is being reported on these networks is about colon cancer, not colon cleansing. This marketing tactic is used to give the would-be purchaser a sense of security about the product because it’s “in the news”. That’s shady. And when customers actually find the inconspicuous and vague “terms and conditions” that govern the transaction that they are making to receive Max Colon, they often don’t realize that they must return the product within fifteen days of the day that it was shipped out to them. That hardly gives the customer time to even try Max Colon. That’s shady. And finally, a large number of customers who want to escape the monthly shipment option (according to the Better Business Bureau link above) are refused that option by Max Colon. That’s really shady.

Perhaps more alarmingly, however, is the harm that companies like Max Colon do to reputable companies who manufacture, distribute, and market colon cleansing products in an honest and professional manner. Because colon cleansing has so many benefits for the human body, it is essential to get the word out there for the consumer to see how they can improve their health, reduce their risk of disease, and enhance the quality of their lives through colon cleansing. Companies like Max Colon make that task even harder because many consumers begin to think of all cleansing products as scams because they have been “burned” by one. The sad fact is that these same consumers are missing out on colon cleansing to avoid being scammed, and their health may suffer for it. Shame on you, Max Colon, and other companies like you.
