Stevia Part 2
When I talk to someone about artificial sweeteners, I get incensed. I become animated and often times a bit overwhelmed, but there’s good reason for it. They’re just plain bad for you. Have you ever seen or read about what things like Aspartame do to your body. Have you noticed the warning labels on products that contain Saccharin? These are artificial and incredibly dangerous and yet the FDA feels perfectly happy flouting their mettle as sweeteners to people who don’t know any better.
I’ve long been an advocate of Stevia, the one sugar substitute the FDA should be promoting and the one that they have decided to ban. The logic is backward and it can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you look more closely at what the major players in the industry do to your body and what Stevia does in contrast.
Comparing Sides
Let’s take a closer look at exactly how Stevia stacks up against artificial sweeteners. First, there is the matter of its origins. Stevia was found to grow naturally in the mountains of Paraguay. It has been used for hundreds of years as a tea sweetener and has been picked up and endorsed by regulatory forces in Europe, Japan, and South America.
Artificial sweeteners like Aspartame have been around for a few short decades and have always been controversial in the International community. Countries like Japan have severely restricted its used and yet the FDA has passed it, despite testing that links the chemical substance to more than 95 individual negative side effects including things like brain tumors, seizures, and even blindness.
Other artificial sweeteners such as Cyclamates have been banned outright, even in the United States due to their risk of increased cancer rates and other horrible side effects in human beings. And yet, even when the man who was responsible for the research and banning of Cyclamates spoke out against Aspartame, he was ignored.
The soft drink industry also had its doubts, publishing a 30 page report in 1983 that spoke against the possible use of aspartame in its soft drinks. Eventually, even they changed their minds as they realized how cheap and easy it would be to market the chemical as a “diet” alternative.
The main problem with Aspartame is that it is not solely a sweetener. The chemicals that it conducts act directly on the brain to excite certain parts and over stimulate it. This overstimulation is what has been cited time and again by individuals who have been brave enough to stand against it. The brain lesions and tumors that have plagued the population in the last 20 years are not a coincidence and yet in 1996, the sweetener was somehow granted blanket approval by the FDA and has become more prevalent than ever.
You Would be Crazy to Use an Artificial Sweetener
There it is. I can’t be any blunter than that. What artificial sweeteners do your brain and your body is well beyond what any civilized society should accept from a product approved and seemingly endorsed by the FDA. The outcry that it takes to overturn an FDA approval is well beyond the voice of this one woman, but I can tell you that I have tried my hardest to make it heard.
The prevalence of Aspartame in the market while Stevia is outright ignored and companies that claim it is a sweetener and not just an herbal supplement, is preposterous. You would be crazy to choose something so dangerous for you over a naturally occurring herb; an herb that has never been shown, in tests, to have any correlation to negative side effects in the human body. In fact, the list of positive side effects for Stevia is almost as long as the list of negatives for its chemical counterparts. It’s a no brainer if you ask me; Stevia is clearly the best sweetener around.
