One Sausage Per Day Increases Cancer Risk By 20%
I’ve never been a fan of processed meats and have always been willing to freely tell those around me. My family and friends call me the hot dog Nazi because I always remind them of what they are putting into their bodies. That being said, I am not completely unsocial. I have been known to scarf down a delicious hot dog at a ball game or beach bbq, but this happens on a pretty infrequent basis, and I always have everything else in check health wise. You’ve got to let go and have fun every once in a while, or you’ll go nuts.
By now, you’ve probably heard similar stories about the wide array of waste and byproducts packed into hot dogs. It may have affected you; or you may have decided to turn a blind eye like so many others.
A conversation I had the other day with a close friend while at a baseball game really got the juices flowing again and when I hopped online to do a bit more reading, I was not entirely shocked to find that there have now been studies directly linking the eating of processed meats to an increased risk of cancer by about 20%. That’s one measly sausage per day, three pieces of bacon, a few slices of ham, a pastrami sandwich. Millions of Americans manage to find the time in their day to eat that much processed meat and they’re all increasing their cancer risk significantly. This isn’t a 16 ounce steak or a double half-pound burger –it’s a single sausage every day.
I’ll admit, I always like to have new studies in my corner when I tell friends and family just how dangerous their next hot dog really is, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy reading them. This kind of information is highly disturbing, especially when you consider just how many people eat processed meat each day.
The study in question, reported by the Daily Mail, a UK newspaper, is based on compiled statistics from multiple experts and health organizations. The study reveals that 1.8 ounces of processed meat a day increases the risk of bowel cancer – one of the most deadly forms of cancer – by 20%. While we have known for a while that too much meat can be dangerous, it is becoming even more abundantly evident that even a small amount of the wrong kinds of meat can be dangerous. As the second deadliest form of cancer, only behind lung cancer, we need to stop and take a look at what these meats are truly doing to our bodies.
The World Cancer Research Fund makes it pretty clear their position on the matter; their scientific advisor, Martin Wiseman, says when it comes to eating processed meat, “the safest amount to eat is none at all.” I couldn’t agree more.
The risk of cancer that increases when you ingest any form of chemical or salt infused food is becoming so evident that I cannot honestly understand why more people do not make the move to cut these dangerous items from their diets. In addition to bowel cancer, processed meats have been linked to prostate, lung, stomach, and esophageal cancers.
When you think about how much processed meat is ingested every day – from that burger at the local fast food joint to the hot dog at the ball game or that link of sausage for breakfast, it is a small wonder that 1 in 20 adults will be stricken with some form of bowel cancer in their lifetime. Simply cutting out processed meats can cut down the risk by 20% and that’s an amazing statistic.
If you’re going to eat processed meat more than once per month, I highly suggest you embark on a colon cleanse program like the one DrFloras puts out. That analogy is if you’re going to get your hands dirty, at least use soap, right? The right type of colon cleanse can help you in so many different ways, and it certainly seems to fit in here to clean you out before the ‘bad stuff’ from the processed meats have a chance to do their dirty work to your colon.
