Hoodia Gordonii – The 10:1 and 20:1 ratio fraud

In the modern age of weight loss products, Hoodia Gordonii is among the most commonly cited as the up and comer to watch. Its natural ability to block the brain’s sensation of hunger has made it incredibly popular with those who have the means to lose weight but cannot control their cravings. Unfortunately, because it has become so popular, Hoodia has also started to suffer from a litany of false claims and scams from the manufacturers that provide it. One such issue is that of the 20:1 or 10:1 labeling misconception that will arise for many Hoodia products. It can appear in one of three different formats, each of them causing confusion in both consumers and Hoodia reviews alike.

The 10:1 Chinese Hoodia Issue

Many times, a product will use the 10:1 ratio to label their product in an attempt to make their product appear more potent when, in reality, the product is actually much less potent. A common practice among Hoodia Gordonii manufacturers in recent years has been to use the much cheaper, much more freely available Chinese Hoodia, derived from the Hoodia Cactus, to fill their supplements. The problem with this is that Chinese Hoodia not only does not contain the active ingredient that supports appetite suppression, it is produced in factories that do not comply with the same quality standards that we expect of our supplements.

The 20:1 Extract Claims

Another, very common issue is the use of the 20:1 label to state that the Hoodia used in a supplement was extracted at a 20:1 ratio to be incredibly potent. Companies claim that for every 1 kilogram of Hoodia Gordonii extract produced, 20 kilograms was used to produce it. This is misleading as it is essentially impossible to do so. The cost of a kilogram of Hoodia Gordonii ready for use is as much as $300, making it almost $6000 for 20 kilograms. The cost of a single bottle of pills with 45 grams of Hoodia extract is usually around $40; while the cost to produce the 45 grams using a 20:1 reduction method would be as high as $250 for that same bottle if the claims made were true. It is simply not possible to have used so much Hoodia to produce that bottle of supplements.

In these cases, the 20:1 ratio actually refers to the ratio of fresh raw Hoodia Gordonii it takes to produce dried Hoodia, ready for use in capsules. Essentially, the 20:1 ratio simply means it takes a lot of raw product to create ready to use product. This has nothing to do with potency or effectiveness. Hoodia Gordonii side effects are not affected by this ratio; nor is the supplement’s cost. If you think about it, every naturally occurring product will have a similar ratio when dried. When moisture is removed from something, it loses weight – a lot of weight. However, the exact same nutrients and active ingredients are still present in that 1 kilogram. Nothing has changed – the concentration is not greater, nor is the supplement any more powerful.

The best way to be sure you get the Hoodia Gordonii product that is exactly what it claims to be is to read reviews from reliable sources.  Unfortunately 99% of the sources out there will lie to you, including the plethora of fake ‘review sites.’  Don’t trust them.  Create an account here and ask other users/readers like yourself what is working for them.  What may have been great last year may be plagued with issues this year.  Get current information and then make your choice.  There are a few solid products on the market – you just need to uncover them.
