Hi angel,
Presbycusis is basically the loss of hearing in older people, it mainly causes the loss of hearing high pitched sounds. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty in hearing conversations when there is background noise
- The speech of others may seem slurred or inaudible
- It may be easier to hear a man's voice (low pitched) as opposed to a woman's voice (high pitched)
- Tinnitus may also occur
Hope that this is useful.

Tinnitus is usually a loud ringing in the ear. It can be a buzzing, whistling or humming sound too. It is a symptom of other things such as earache, foreign objects or ear wax build up. In its most serious form it can disturb sleep, quiet or everyday activities.

Presbycusis is one of the most common hearing loss disorders in older adults. People with this condition have particular trouble hearing high pitched sounds – they may have no trouble hearing the rumble of a nearby truck, but can easily miss the phone ringing or have difficulty understanding a woman’s voice.
This form of hearing loss is most often caused by age related changes in the inner ear, although some people show changes in the middle ear and or in the nerve pathways leading to the brain.

Does anyone know what can be done to help? I'm assuming hearing aids, but are cochlear implants an option?

Cochlear implants are very effective for deaf patients. There are no side effects yet been reported but this is effective mostly to children.

Yes, an ENT doctor is the one who perform cochlear implants. Since this is a hearing problem and the doctors that are taking part of this are ENT.
