Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which is transmitted through contact with water or food contaminated with urine of rodents and other domestic animals.

It causes fever, jaundice, bleeding and kidney failure. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics is important.

Just some FYI, leptospirosis is very common in flooded areas, since that's how it is usually transmitted. Imagine walking in a flood mixed with the urine of rodents. Eww. yuck

We all know that we can get leptopirosis in water once it is contaminated with the urine of rats but we can get this bacteria once we are bitten by rodents or we can get rabbies instead?

Yes, they carry rabies but chance of spreading is very minimal. When rats bite an animal or a human being, the rabies that they carry is already dead. Before entering to another body, the virus is being absorbed by the saliva of the rodent. Thus, the saliva of rats has the virus but cannot be transmitted once it bites another being.

Yes, rats only carry leptospirosis. Rats that lives in slumps and canals are the most like to have this disease.

The conversation is becoming grosser and grosser. My suggestion: keep your house clean (especially if you're living in Asia).

Be neat and clean. Do not mess around so that those critters won’t be able to spread this disease.

Is there anything, aside from antibiotic, that can treat leptospirosis?
