Can we go for steroids to improve our body. Will they affect our health in the long run? Any views?

Steroids are classified as anabolic and corticosteroids. Corticosteroids, such as cortisone, are drugs that doctors typically prescribe to help control inflammation in the body. They're often used to help control conditions like asthma etc. Generally, steroids are used by sportsman to improve their performance on the field especially during the competitions. But, prolonged usage will have harmful effects on the body. Steroids are to be used sparingly only when required.

Some adults and teens use illegal anabolic steriods to lower body fat, get bigger muscles and increase strength. They use the drugs because they are seeking to improve how well they play sports or how they look. Abusing anabolic steroids can reduce sperm count, shrink the testicles, enlarge the breasts of men while women will experience increase in body hair, make skin rough, decrease breast size, enlarge the clitoris and deepen the voice. In both men and women it can cause bone growth to stop before its complete, higer level of bad cholesterol and heart attack.

Some steriod abusers take more than one substance at once as a way of increasing their mass quicker. Steriod use can also shorten your life span, so I would suggest avoiding them altogether.

Unless these steriods are prescribed by a doctor, their use is infact, illegal. Apart from this, common effects include, tumors, hair loss, violence & rampages, breast growth in guys and beard growth in women.

Anabolic steroids are a class of hormones which build up mass in muscles. Anabolic steroids increases muscle mass and physical strength, and are consequently used in sport and bodybuilding to enhance strength or physique. Long term usage of anabolic steroids is fraught with serious health risks.

The use of anabolic steroids is banned by all major sporting bodies, including the International Olympic Committee because of their potential advantage in competitive sports.

I write for another forum consistently called Lean Bulk.

Here is a direct link into a section called PCT: A Clinician's View.

http://www.leanbulk.com/forum/pct-clinicians-view/

PCT = Post-Cycle Therapy. In other words, when you are coming off of them, what would an effective treatment modality be - truthfully a question for an Endocrinologist alone though many are not very well-versed in this area unfortunately.

I would ask to direct your questions to that area for more explicits, as much is explained in many of the posts I have done there and you will get a feel for the research I do in this particular area. I have worked with athletes for MANY years now and perhaps surprising to some the current baseball shananigans are by far not the origin of steroid and illegal substance use and many of your "greats" have likely used "something" despite their testimonials to the contrary.

Please note that I do NOT condone the use, but there are many misguided theories about the substances suggested "anabolic" in nature. Food is anabolic in nature for Pete's sake.

In the study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers surveyed nearly 2,000 men about anabolic steroid use via the Internet.

The results showed that the average male anabolic steroid user is:

About 30 years old
Well-educated
Earns an above-average income in a white-collar job

In addition, the survey shows that most did not start using steroids in adolescence, nor are they motivated by athletic competition or sports performance.

Instead, the typical anabolic steroid user wants to increase muscle mass, strength, and physical attractiveness. Other motivating factors for taking anabolic steroids were increasing confidence, decreasing body fat, improving mood, and attracting a sexual partner.

People who abuse anabolic steroids can have withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking them. Symptoms include having mood swings, being extremely tired, having no desire to eat, and craving steroids. Anabolic steroids can cause serious side effects. Some of these effects can be permanent.

Anabolic steroids can lead to premature heart attacks, strokes, liver tumors, kidney failure and serious psychiatric problems. In addition, because steroids are often injected, users risk contracting or transmitting HIV or hepatitis.."
So better yet go in more natural way..

Long-term use of steroids can lead to Cushing's syndrome, which is a hormonal imbalance. Prominent features of those with Cushing's are moon face and buffalo hump. That is why steroid use in clinical settings is tapered so as not to cause Cushing's syndrome. In the same way, steroid use for bodybuilding purposes should not be abused.

The liver can be affected with orally ingested steroids. This means that studies have shown the levels of liver enzymes to increase after ingesting oral steroids which is an indication of liver activity. While some experts say that this is a sign of possible liver damage, other studies have shown that enzyme levels return to normal when the you stops taking the steroid.
