Children are now recommended to have cholesterol testing and have medications if their cholesterol levels appear to be high. This is to prevent them from having more complicated heart problems when they grow up.

I'm not sure I would want my kid to be taking cholesterol-lowering drugs while she's still in grade school. But if it really helps, I'll consider it.

And one more thing, doctors are just prescribing these new anti-cholesterol drugs because they're afraid that parents will put their child in a sensible diet to manage their cholesterol and go through this drug-free!!!

To me this is just another band aid around the problem that is the American Diet. I would guess that most kids with "cholesterol problems" probably eat very little real meat (i.e. not hot dogs and fast food meat products) and eggs. Instead I would guess that most of these maladies are based on trans fat-laden snacks and lack of inactivity.

If parents feel that it is not right to give their kids lipid lowering medication then this is a wake up call to them to monitor the eating habits and daily nutrition of their kids.

Thanks for the comments.

I agree with you. It should start with a home that supports a healthy diet. That would prevent a child from reaching the point where he or she would need medication for cholesterol.

Children nowadays eat too much oily foods from fast food restaurant. Its better to check their cholesterol level as soon as their younger years to prevent heart diseases in the future.

I agree with you Bwoods. Parents should be responsible by guiding their children on the food that they eat. According to WHO, 8 out of 10 children are obese and 3 of it has high cholesterol.
