DR,
I use painkillers at any sign of pain..if it's headaches, joint pains, toothaches etc..I have heard a lot of people say that it's better to deal with the pain through breathing as opposed to painkillers because we're filtering crap into our system? is this true DR? thanks.

Dont get it too often or else you'll be immune. Although, admittedly, i take Tylenol or panadeine when my head aches which i think are caused by my hormonal contraceptive.

Taking pain killers is inescapable in cases like toothache, headache and knee pains as short term remedy. You need to go to the root of the problem for a permanent solution which only a qualified doctor can give. I don't think mere breathing exercises will relieve you from these aches. First, check up with your family physician and take appropriate medicine. Later, you can suitably alter your personal and eating habits. Best of Luck.

I am not an expert but i think depending on medicines without your doctor's prescription can be bad for you. If it's only common and minor pain have you tried a relaxing massage?

We're the same gareth. I take painkillers at the slightest pain...usually headaches or body aches. I know I shouldn't but I still do because it really helps me. My mother tells me that I'd become immune but after so many years, it still works.
I dont know maybe I'll pay for this when I get older.

I read that pain killers, particularly analgesics can sometimes cause chronic pain, rather than relieve it. So what are we supposed to do when you something aches?

I recently learned that ibuprofen is bad for your kidneys and that if taken regularly over the years can take its toll on your kidneys. Paracetamol is the safest, as per my doctor

Well if you don't want to use painkillers, you might want to make use of non-pharmacological management for pain. For example, if my head aches I ask my someone to massage it, or if I have menstrual cramps I sometimes go for warm compresses if the pain's pretty tolerable. I only use painkillers if I can't bear the pain. That way, I don't develop tolerance for painkillers.

my mom used to avoid giving me pain killers as long as i can still bear the pain. she said she didnt want me to develop tolerance or it wont work anymore. but when i finally began to live on my own, i use one whenever i feel the slightest headache or body ache. but yikes, it can actually cause chronic pain???? gotta go easy on those things...

Pain killers ahs many different functions on your body once you have taken it. The main use of it is blocking the signal of the pain going to your brain using your nerve cells. Once it is blocked your brain will not detect if one your body part is painful or having a problem.

I dont think that our usual pain killers are addicting. Although you can get immune from it by taking so much of it.

The biggest problem of taking pain killers, especially thos that contains acetaminophen, is when they are taken too much or overdosing on it. It can kill the perspn who is using them. These type of pain killers are not narcotic the one that will eventually kill them is acetaminophen.

I think that taking too much pain killer can be addictive. If you have been taking them just for pain, then it is not addiction but if the pain still persists I suggest that you have to consult a doctor.

You will develop a tolerance on the medication and it would double your dosage. The side effect would be addiction and can be fatal if not controlled.
