Any suggestion or recommendations of how to avoid the drying and/or irritating effect on skin from chlorine? I’m over 50’s and I want to swim more often as part of my fitness goals.

Lotion can block chlorine from penetrating your skin. I use it an hour before swimming. You can try unscented lotions.

After swimming, I normally bathe with luke warm water. Use liquid soap that has moisturizer. Remember to moisturize yourself everyday! Goodluck!

You will find great choices on swimwear stores. There are soaps that grant to wash off chlorine and at the same time moisturizes your skin.

I heard about swimming athletes using paraffin oil to protect skin from chlorinated water, the water can't penetrate easily and flows over more freely. For hair, washing it before swimming and washing it again after swimming with clarifying shampoo helps remove chlorine from your hair.

Yes, chlorine can dry our skin. The chemical element of chlorine triggers the dryness of the skin and that’s why when you got out of the swimming pool your skin becomes dry easily.

Is this the side effect of using chlorine when washing our clothes?

I think it could be. There are 2 ways we could get direct contact from chlorine. These are from the clothes we wear and from the swimming pools.
