I own a male cat and he's turning 1 at the end of July. He's great company, but I've a problem with him..everytime he is in the house (he goes in and out through a cat flap) he sprays and it SMELLS AWFUL!! I have read about getting cats fixed...and would like to know if you have a male cat fixed does it still spray? I need to sort this out because the smell is crazy bad!

Generally speaking he should stop spaying, well unless it has become a habit. The longer he goes with testosterone in his body, then the more likely he will continue spaying. He really isn't that old, so there is time yet for him to stop, just be hopeful. Don't expect the change to be instant as it takes a good while for the hormones to leave his bodily system. Some of his smell might be from the litter box (if he has one), there is NOTHING worse than cat urine...speaking of that I had to clean some up earlier - NASTY.
Make sure you own two litter boxes, to alternate when the other is being cleaned, maybe you could try a different dirt for the box or maybe he would even prefer soil? I know my cat prefers to go on soil. Also make sure the dirt in the litter tray isn't that of a strong scent, it could put him off and could becausing this.
Well either way I'd say he does need to be fixed, he is out there prowling about and there are more kittens in this world because of cats like that, and he will stray further and will fight more if he's not fixed. Keep him indoors until after he gets neutered, it's safer....I'm scared of my moggie being run down by a truck or something.

Hope it works out for you.

get him snipped, my kitty teddy was awful with spaying until he went for the snip aka neutering. he used to fight loads, and prowled back into the house with lots of cuts, so i knew it was time to get the problem fixed. i kept him indoors for a few weeks after he was neutered, he was drowsy a lot of the time and didn't move much with the cone on his head (poor thing) but now after he has healed i have noticed he is in a lot less fights and the amount of spaying has rapidly reduced. take your kitty to the vets and get it sorted there smile

Neuter your cat whether it stops the spraying or not! It can't hurt, and you probably don't want to deal with him carousing and fighting anyway.

I got my male cat spayed when he was about 2, he hadn't stopped spraying by then and it was driving me crazy! He is a lot calmer now because of it.

I would neuter, too, even if just for overpopulation reasons, but another non-surgical cure for the spraying is to use diluted vinegar in a spray bottle on the spots where he sprays. The smell makes them think twice before peeing.

Your vet can answer this question. Neutering a cat can help reduce the incidence of objectionable behavior.

Spaying is a behavior in a cat that needs to be treated and Neutering is the therapy for it. Now I see that cats are very difficult to breed and taken care of rather than a dog.

Is neutering really a must if you have a cat?

I think it is. This will help your cat’s behavior and also train them on which area of your house they can pee or dump their disposal.
