I started yoga a few weeks ago and now have been looking at tai chi and meditation, things like that....so anyway I was wondering if anyone could explain it to me. I wouldn't be able to meditate because I don't know how to, I'm not even that sure as to what it is. I've wanted to try it but just don't know what to do.

Thanks, G.

Hey george!

I've read a lot about meditation, but I've never gotten around to trying it out. I'll try to help you anyway! Basically it's all about finding self awareness. In order to find self awareness you firstly have to silent the mind, and only then can you find self awareness. There are lots of links the give you the basics on meditation, it just means looking about. According to friends personal experiences it's a really positive form of exercise to add to your life. It's great for stress, channeling anger frustration and anxiety and so on..

I say give it a go, you never know it could be really relaxing like yoga.

The dictionary defines meditating as to: 'think deeply', 'to reflect' or 'to empty the mind in order to concentrate on nothing or one thing, especially as a religious exercise'.

I've read there are two types of meditation:

1. Mystical

and

2. Secular

It's practically getting your body and mind into a relaxed state allowing yourself to de-stress and refresh itself. Sometimes all it takes is sitting comfortably in a quiet place, then you can turn your attention to your breathing.

Mystical
Some religions use a form of meditation in their lifes, but it's not really the sort of meditation most people think of i.e. sitting on the ground concentrating on breathing. Christians pray as a form of meditation, whilst Buddhists practice Lamrim meditation and even Catholics pray on the Rosary, they're all forms of meditation.

Secular
Here meditation is intended to help with success, health, self esteem, creativity etc. The person usually meditates at least twice a day for about twenty minutes each time.

Have a go at it, what's the worst that can happen?

It's turning your mind off from the outside world and focusing on your own. It's hard to explain without being there or seeing it (try to youtube it), but the general idea is to dig into your mind, you sit with your eyes closed and focus on your breathing and then let your mind go loose. When your mind becomes 'free' you might hear a sort of static in your ears, maybe even voices. I know that sounds weird, but it's cool and you won't really understand it until you do it. It's more about relaxation, you don't think, you just observe. It's great though, I love meditating..you should give tai chi a good too.

Meditation is grossly misunderstood nowadays. Some consider it as a relaxation technique while others consider it as concentration technique. In fact, meditation is the cessation of thought process which is the highest form. But, at a lower level, doing things with intense awareness is meditation. It is all aimed at silencing the mind which is the most difficult thing to accomplish. But, by constant practice it can be achieved. Regular practice results in health benefits like controlling hypertension, diabetes and other bodily disorders.

WOW. Thanks everyone, I didn't expect such a good report back but now I know what meditation is. It sounds difficult but interesting, I think I'll go to see what the classes are like to check out if it is for me or not. Thanks everyone!!

I want to try this but kinda afraid because I'm not sure if I'll be able to tune out the things I am thinking. Being a mom of 5 kids and having to remind all of them and my husband everything has made me into a nervous freak.

I do regular meditation. It silences the mind and leaves you calm and quiet. The feeling can only be experienced, it can not be described adequately in words. Join a meditation class and reap the benefits. You will get tremendous relief from stress and strain. Enjoy. welcome

There are a lot of ways and tips on how to meditate but do not pressure yourself because the purpose of meditation is for you to achieve calm, focus and inner peace by releasing all your stress. Try everyday for 15 minutes to simply close your eyes and listen to your breathing while you are making a positive wish for yourself that will also benefit your family and friends, if this won't work, listen to meditation CD's, that will provide you soothing music to listen to and a voice to guide your thougths and feelings as well.

Medition is a for of concentration process of the mental and physical body to your spiritual source. Meditation started through the buddist or daoist teaching. Medition also improves the practice in scripture reading, spiritual development and moral character improvement.
