Would any other runners like to compare their pre-run food? incl. what not to eat and if you drink anything when your running.

I'm only new to running really but I find I can run longer distances (fantastically) if I eat a well sized meal about 4 hours before I go out running.

My neighbour roped me into a 20k run today..stupidly I ate a peanut butter crumpet and honey crumpet before I left, I'll just say this much; I won't be doing that again!! sick I don't think I'll ever be able to face peanut butter again, it's just nasty!

I heard bananas are good pre run foods? any tips or advice is welcome!!

I usually take more protein and carbs before working out. It helps me stay longer and can focus on my exercise well. I also heard that eating banana is good and I also wanted to try it.

Yeah bananas are great before big runs, so are special drinks. I've read about some isatonic drinks so you could check that out.

My best foods: I like to eat a lot of pasta with some good sauce, at about 3/4 hours before I go out for a run. Then I eat some jellybeans about 20 mins before I head out, sometimes they make me hyper but hey it's good for running!

My worst foods: I had whey protein before I went out, but I ended up having painful cramps when running which was really painful. Say no to whey protein!!

For a normal run I'd eat a banana 30 mins before. My favorite race foods definitely is pasta! Eat pasta as a meal for 5 days, with an overload of water and a banana before the race. Eating anything else doesn't work for me, crumpets before running sounds like a bad idea.

Jelly Beans? sorry

That doesn't sound too healthy to me. Wouldn't that only give you a short burst of energy versus a sustained amount of energy required over the long haul of a 20K run?

What do the moderators of this forum think about this?

It probably isn't all that healthy, but I don't see any problem with eating some jelly beans before a run (well a short one and not a long one), provided you are eating a good meal 3/4 hours beforehand maybe the jelly beans would give you a bit of a kick start to the race.

I tend to follow the same sort pattern as everyone else, a nice big meal that will fuel my run about 3/4 hours before I go out smile it usually does the trick, and also making sure i'm hydrated, a piece of fruit before i run too helps..i guess everyone is different, we all like different foods and what works for one maybe wouldn't for another.

Before I run, I throw 2 bananas, and a cup full of berries into the blender with a fourth a cup of water. blend and drink.
You don`t want to eat to much before you go, cause your body is trying to break down the food, bananas are great cause they have lots of enzymes in them that break down food on there own. Plus with the berries its pretty good.

So basically you are "spiking" your insulin/blood glucose levels right before you workout? Not good if fat loss is the goal.....should wait atleast 2 hours after eating before engaging in exercise

I don't think fat loss was the goal here. This person wants to make it through a 20k run.

I eat a banana with a bit of peanut butter before running. this will really keep me going. Sometimes, I take coffee too. I read in a magazine article that caffeine isnt so bad before a workout. It'll make you last longer.

Is it bad to eat before any kind of exercise or physical activity? Where will you get the energy for it?

It's sometimes dangerous to do so because after you eat, your body is supposed to be digesting, but if you work out, the blood flow is redirected, therefore hindering the digestive process. It can sometimes cause cramps, especially in activities like swimming. And most people feel sluggish after eating so it is really more difficult to move.

The best time to eat would be an hour before you workout, and then after you workout, especially if you want to lose weight

Is it true that when you eat and then go to an exercise routine, it can cause appendicitis?

You will only get appendicitis if you eat too much and begin to run or do sports exercises. If you eat a little and try to go exercising, it will not cause any serious ailment like appendicitis.

You can still eat before you exercise and will not cause appendicitis or stomach discomfort. If you will eat a heavy meal then you can exercise after 3-4 hours and for a light snack you can start after 1-2 hours.

This really works for me. I eat a heavy meal before 2 or 3 hours before I play tennis or go to the gym. It gives me the needed energy and stamina for my activities and it’s not heavy on my stomach since the food is already digested.

Be sure to eat 2-3 hours before you do an exercise or a sports activity. If you have a full stomach and go to any rigid activity or it may cause appendicitis.

I am also belies that, exercise increases circulation, tones up the muscles, reduces stress levels, and slows the aging process, fights toxins increases energy and so much more.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Absolutely frightening - but good info to know!

hello… friends..!!! eat simply foods that your body is familiar with…. if you have been eating a banana and milk before your races or training runs, do not change to a burrito with the works…. the common of your food intake before the race should be composed of complex carbohydrates…. 65 % to 75 % carbohydrates is a fine target to shoot for… if you eat mostly simple sugars such as candy or sweets, your blood glucose levels will spike and then drop quickly, leaving you with low glucose levels at the start of the race…. avoid high protein meals…. protein takes longer to digest and may remain in your stomach longer…. avoid foods that are high in fat…. fatty foods also remain in your stomach longer and can cause problems during the race…
