Has anyone here had gastric bypass or Lap Band procedures? How did it go? Was it worth it?

I am considering having gastric bypass or LapBand done. I know it seems like an "easy out" but I am wondering if this is the only way for me. I feel somewhat addicted to food, and I was wondering if anyone has had this surgery, how much you lost, and if there were any complications. I have heard of people dying from infection after this surgery.

As with any type of surgery there can be complications. My nephew had the lapBand surgery done and after the initial recovery (which went by faster than we thought it would) he started doing alot better. His weight loss has been great since then and has lost well over 150lbs so if you have tried everything else, and it hasnt\t't worked, then go for it. It was well worth it for my nephew.

My father is having the Gastric Bypass later in the summer. Sure, there are complications associated with ANY surgery but that shouldn't be your main focus. While I am sure a few people have had more severe complications, the vast majority have not. The doctors are VERY careful. My father has had to go through a 4 month process (he weighs @ 600lbs) to make sure his organs are doing ok and to make sure he is mentally able to face the weight loss challenge. He had to lose 5% of his body weight on his own (which he has done smile ) and have now set a date for the surgery.

I have several friends that have had Lap Band and it worked beautifully for them. If you are able to get the lap band, I would recommend you try it before Gastric Bypass as it is a bit less evasive.

Congrats to your father and I pray that he has continued to have success. I have a friend that has underwent Gastric Bypass and one that had the Lap Band procedure. Based on their experiences, I would say try the Lap Band before the Gastric Bypass. The results are phenomenal.
