Do scents really have the ability to heal?

Yes, they do! My ex girlfriend was an herbalist and she taught me all about the wonderful world of aromatherapy.

Scents are very psychological so it would make sense that they can heal. There are certain scents that are known to induce humans into a certain mind frame.

The scent triggers a part of the brain that's associated with a certain feeling or mood.

Aromatherapy is great since it sets you in the right mood and it can also enhance your sex life. I use them all the time in the bath, especially lavender oil. It's a great mood enhancer. There are some herbs that work more for men than women, you can find out on the net which herbs are for which particular cause, cure, etc.

I think the question is more if attitude and mood has the ability to heal. Aromatherapy directly affects both. It is incredibly relaxing. (Even more so in a bath)

Aroma Therapy is the treatment by use of essential oils. Two basic principles are at work. One is influence of aroma on the brain and the second is the direct pharmacological effects of the essential oils. However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that healing can be achieved. Some consider it as pseudoscience.

Exactly. Lavender always sends me off to sleep, I love buying the aromatherapy sticks that can be burnt. There are lots of lovely spicy scents that are great for a romantic night in..

Lavender in body wash and body lotion helps calm my hyperactive son and puts him to sleep. This sweet and floral scent is also a good choice in candles to put you in a relaxing mood. Aromatherapy massage on the other hand, is the best anxiety reducer and wonderful pain relief.

You mentioned that it's psychological. So does that mean aromas are not really healing but that we just think that we're being healed and as a result we get better? Like if I'm stressed and I decide to take a lavender bath, will I feel relaxed because of the aroma or because my frame of mind tells me to decide to get better? Please help me understand. Thanks.

lavender essential oil is considered the safest essential oil, so i understand that it is very helpful to you in putting your son to sleep. smile

let me share a few lavender blends/ recipes (because i just made some research on it not so long ago):

Inhalation Blend for Easing Coughs: combine 2 drops eucalyptus, 2 drops lavender, pot of steaming water

Blend for Promoting Sleep: 4 drops lavender to 4 teaspoons of your favorite carrier oil.. use on an oil warmer or a diffuser

Diffuser Blend for Colds: 2 drops lavender, 2 drops eucalyptus and 2 drops tea tree oil.. use on an oil warmer or a diffuser

enjoy aromatherapy! smile

I know that ginger oil (recommended by a friend) is good for increasing libido. A few drops on an oil warmer or diffuser does the trick. If you want to use it as a massage oil, you may do so by diluting a few drops in carrier oil (sweet almond oil is nice).

Superstar:

This is a true statement.

As an herbalist, I use essential oils internally as a supplement to my other customized, liquid, herbal tonics. Aroma therapists would never use them internally because they don't understand all the ramifications of its internal use. (i.e.bile salt production, etc.)

Merely using essential oils through Aroma Therapy is short-changing that specific realm of herbology. To illustrate: Imagine going into a kitchen where someone is cooking a turkey. Wonderful smell. In fact, you'll actually get physiological responses from the aroma such as increased salivating, gurgling of the intestinal juices, a warm fuzzy feeling from the triggered memories of past experiences, etc. However, does just smelling this wonderful aroma actually give you the nutritional value of the turkey? No!

In order to receive the nutritional/therapeutic value of essential oils FULLY, you must ingest them; they must be taken internally. Only then can the full spectrum of the oils' healing qualities be achieved.

Just my opinion.

I can agree with you somehow, such that there is not much scientific evidence related to aromatherapy. However, this is not always the case - eating a turkey and using essential oil is not the same banana.

The use of essential oil is not limited to smelling by itself . There are certain essential oils with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, etc properties - the application of these oils do not necessarily entail ingestion. If that is the case, then you have to ingest foot powder and ringworm cream to heal athlete's foot or ring worm.

Now, my challenge to you: Tell me how many servings of Aloe Vera do I need to eat to heal my sunburn. lol idiot

My 2 cents.

I understand what you're saying. In fact, external application of essential oils is better than sniffing them since it will diffuse into the body. Is that what you're referring to?

Aloe? I've always found that an external application for sunburn is much better in this instance.

Is there any scientific proof that aromatherapy " cures " said symptoms?
