There is NO excuse for obesity. It is NOT a disease ,as most will want you to think. I saw a friend turn from an ordinary guy to an obese guy and it was because of plain laziness.

It all boils down to laziness. Like addictions, eating is just another escape mechanism devised to escape the pains of life.

The problem is, we've become such a convenience-obsessed culture that it's easy for weak individuals to become obese.

Also I blame the parents a bit for not educating the kids more....But also, when these kids are becoming adults, they have a choice, they have education, they have so many other options that can help them, other than blaming their parents for being obese.

Staying active, eating healthy, watching your weight and not eating too much crap daily is a start!

Also getting a physical once every year is a great measure to establish your progress over the last year as well as where you stand in the obesity range and what you can do. Far too many people do not do yearly physicals.

Dealing with obesity is not difficult once you have made up your mind. It requires a change in mind set. First, change your eating habits and exercise regularly. Avoid alcohol, fatty foods, soft drinks, butter, red meat, milk and milk products. It is said, always eat 25% less than what you normally eat. This is one of the best ways to fight obesity. Go for vegetarian diet, take lots of fruit and freshly squeezed juices, salads and leafy vegetables. You need to be mentally prepared for that to happen.

What about protein?

Way more important than carbs.....what about your EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids)?

Why are there more obese people in the US than in other countries? If it's because of fastfoods like mcdonalds, that doesnt make sense 'cause mcdonalds is everywhere. Most, if not all, countries have mcdonalds.

I believe that it's all in the mindset. You have to truly make yourself ready to change your lifestyle. You can't go at it half-heartedly. Once you are mentally ready, I think it can be fairly easy to be successful to adjust your diet and exercise regimen.

Can chronic ear infections as a child have relation to being obese as an adult?

yes, it has been reported recently that this is true. What really happens is that damage caused by chronic ear infections in children may affect their sense of taste, making fatty and sweet foods more desirable and increasing the risk of obesity. Guess thats the real co-relation.

This does not make much sense to me; tomorrow you could say tonsillitis causes obesity, or chronic cold does, as Ears, nose and throat are all connected to the mouth and therefore sense of taste.

I did read a recent report in the newspaper about this, and I too was surprised, but apparently it is true. Or at least according to a study - that chronic ear infections appear to trigger a preference for high-calorie food, leading to increased consumption and excessive weight gain in adulthood.

I read somewhere (sorry I can't find the article anymore) that obesity can sometimes be caused by the Adenovirus-36 (Ad-36). It only mentioned it briefly and i would like to ask if anyone knows more about this and whether it's a legit virus or just one of those 'studies"

Research has shown that there is a link between obesity and Ad-36 because the virus has a direct on human fat cells. But this doesn't mean that this is the only cause of obesity. One gene from Ad-36 is responsible for the obesity effect in infected patients.

Normal weight obesity applies to those people who have a normal BMI or body mass index but still have a high percentage of body fat. Both BMI and body fat percentages can be measured by various means to determine whether you meet the criteria for normal weight obesity. Body fat percentages of greater than twenty percent in men and thirty percent in women are considered to be diagnostic for this condition.

Studies have shown that people who have a high body fat percentage are at a higher risk of heart disease even if their body weight is normal. They're also at higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome which increases the risk not only of heart disease but of type 2 diabetes.

Actually, I have this condition. I have normal weight but my body fat percentage is above 30%, that is why I enrolled in our local gym. I did not know this was possible until I had my body fat checked, so I ended up having a weight loss program in the gym instead of just a maintenance program.

Just eat healthier foods, cut down on fatty foods, and exercise. You do not need to deprive yourself of meals or snacks. Also, weight building exercises are good for converting your body fat into muscles.
