I just purchased a German Shepherd pup and it is the smartest damn dog I have ever met. It watches TV with me. It knows about 4 tricks already and it is barely potty trained. He's able to figure out what I would think would be complex thought for a dog... like putting a toy under a towel and seeing if it knows that the toy is actually there.

Anybody else ever have one of these? Is the breed just this smart? I had another dog that was smart, but this one blows him away.

I think the smart does not come with the breed, but with the dog itself – kind of like people. Be sure to brush your dog a lot during shedding season though – I have one and they lose countless amounts of hair!

God, you are lucky with your dog. i cannot explain that i went through in the days, when i just bought a dog into my family. However, it has turned out to be fine but has taken a lot of my patience at its expense.

Like it was mentioned earlier, brains do not come with the breed. It comes with the individual dog itself. I have had mutts that were smarter than purebreds and vice versa. I have also seen some incredibly stupid german shepards but way to go on training him that fast. Sounds like you may have a very god dog when he grows up.

LOL' nah its not the breed, although they are a smarter breed, I however have a german shepard as well, unfortunitly mine lacks the brains, she is beautiful but really really slow,
Not a word of lie, she buried a bone and went to look for it 5 minutes later, and she dug a dozen holes over the yard before she found the first one again......its sad, but I love her!!

I think German Shepherds are smart dogs espcially concerning sniffing out stuff, like you say a toy you hid under the towel. Thats probably the reason why there are so many German Shepherds and Labradors being used by Cops all over the world.

German Shepherds were originally bred to have the withstanding for shepherding duties and the intelligence to pick up quickly and easily on training. Hence this could be why you have a smart dog ! I do think it comes down to individual personality of the dog too though.

My neighbor has this type of dog and they smell pretty bad. They bathe their dog almost 3x a week and he still stinks a lot. Is there any way to stop the bad odor?

My friend has a German shepherd and I noticed that they smell a lot. She is bathing them frequently and still has the same result. I told her to bring it to a veterinarian or to a dog grooming center for treatment.

Do you mean for a German Sheppard? Definitely, you can use dog shampoo because they are designed for canine. I guess ask your vet for a better brand of this shampoo.
