It depends if he is a first timer or an old timer in gym exercises. For first timer their gym instructor will give nmecessary exercise to target specific muscles and for old timers they can still do their old exercises but it will be much lighter and will be ask to do more cardio exercises.

If they were a gym rat before than they can still do the same exercises then. They should ask the gym instructor for some additional exercises to maintain their body physique.

Is it true that when we get older we need to decrease the load of weights if we are going to the gym?

It’s hard for men to do body building and loss those extra fat. Metabolism also slows when people are getting older. I suggest you do more cardio exercises rather than lifting weights.
