I live in the Middle Keys and am a 58 year old female. I have multiple health problems,
including a few extra pounds, however that is not my reason for joining.

I am going through a rough divorce and the stress has increased my attacks from
Meniere's disease. I was first diagnosed in 2001 when I experienced the attacks
almost daily for months and then they finally tapered off to occasionally. The attacks
have been increasing in frequency for months now and recently I had two attacks
in one day. The attacks make me so sick and are so debilitating I can't function at all.

I was wondering if anyone here has the same problem and do you know of anything
new the medical profession has come up with that helps?

I think this is a depression. How are you doing now?

Hello -

I am still having attacks and not functioning very well. Are you familiar with Meniere's and if you are do
you know of anything new that might help?

I’m sorry I don’t have any information regarding this ailment. Have you consulted a doctor?

Yes, I have been to multiple doctors and been through hearing and balance testing and years of attacks, with
each attack I loose more hearing.

This is a inner ear fluid problem. Usually only effects one ear, in my case the right ear.
I take a fluid pill every day and meclizine sometimes helps the extreme vertigo associated with an attack,
if I can keep it down. When an attack happens I will be crawling, if I can move at all, throwing up, bells ringing
(although mine has been ringing so long - now it just hummmmmmms all the time 24/7) and pressure in the right side of my head.

An attack can last hours or days. Depends on the severity of the attack after the vertigo
has subsided my brain feels like I had a stroke.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any new treatments or medication, short of surgery, which I am told does
not work.

I have googled your condition and found out that there is no efficient information regarding your disease. I’m sorry to tell you but there is no cure for this disease. Did you consider having a surgery?

Hi fjoones -

Thanks for your reply. I know there is no cure for Meniere's Disease. I was hoping someone
knew of something new to help the symptoms.

I have checked into surgery and the consensus of my doctors is the surgery doesn't work,
you loose all the hearing in the ear and still have the same problems.

Thanks,
Tiki

That’s so sad hearing from doctors about your condition. There’s no way out on your ailment. I think you should not undergo any surgery since it will not do any good for you.

This is a new thing for me. I haven’t heard of this disease and I’m sorry that there is any cure for this one. When you take your meds does it help you remove those sounds that you hear?

This might be a symptom of sudden deafness. This is also hard to treat since there is no known treatment yet.

Sorry I have not answered your reply. I didn't receive an email notice that anyone had posted. The medication doesn't help the noise in my ear. Years ago when this first started I would hear bells ringing in my right ear, all the time, now the ringing has turned into a hummmmmmmmmmm all the time and nothing stops it.

I take Triamterene-HCTZ 37.5 mg. once a day every day
I take Meclizine HCL 25 mg. for the vertigo whenever I feel an attack coming. If I can keep the Meclizine down long enough
it seems to help the vertigo some.

If the attacks keep coming, which they frequently do and don't quit and the pressure keeps building on the
right side of my head........I take Betahistine Dihydrochloride 8 mg. once a day (This medication is hard to find because it must come from a Compound Pharmacy and is not covered by my insurance.)

I don't believe it has anything to do with sudden deafness. I lose a little more hearing in my right ear everytime I
experience an attack.

This disease is not new. Meniere's disease first described in 1861 by the French physician Prosper Meniere, is characterized by multiple symptoms, all associated with excessive fluid in the inner ear involving both the hearing and balance organs. Excessive fluid in the cochlea (hearing organ) is known as cochlear hydrops. Excessive fluid in the semicircular canals (balance organ) results in dizziness and is known as vestibular hydrops. Almost all Meniere's patients have both cochlear and vestibular hydrops.

Meniere's doesn't get better.......it only gets worse. During times of decreased stress I don't experience as many attacks.
I am still dealing with a very nasty divorce, so the stress level never decreases.
