There's this recent advisory that milk manufactured in China contains melamine. What then is melamine and what are its effects on the body? Why did it alarm a lot of countries, to the point that they banned milk products coming from China?

Thanks in advance. :D

Melamine is a chemical that can be dangerous when taken in large doses (whether swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed) and if mixed with cyarunic acid. Some of its effects include fatal kidney stones, cancer, reproductive damage, and eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. It has been seen in Chinese products, not just in milk. It was even detected in luncheon meats, so it's better not to eat/drink Chinese products until they have been declared melamine-free.

Melamine affects mainly the kidneys because it is mainly excreted by the kidneys. So when high levels of Melamine are eaten, they start to precipitate in the kidneys causing kidney stones. The usual symptoms of kidney stones are pain in the back and sometimes blood in the urine.

It is not actually the melamine itself that causes kidney damage - it's the melamine-cyanuric acid complex.

The effect is more or less the same for babies and adult. However, for an adult to experience the effect of melamine, an adult would have to have higher dosages of melamine.

Yes, it can be found on dairy product. Just on the recent outbreak of melamine scare in China, it was found mostly on infant milk.

Melamine targets the kidney stones and the urinary tract of our body. The symptoms of melamine poisoning are severe pain when urinating, cramping, blood in the urine, may feel a burning sesation when peeing, fever chills and nausea.

Since it is a type of food poisoning, I think you should give the patient plenty of water and try to vomit to remove the toxins. If not then you need to rush the victim to the nearest hospital for immediate care.
