The centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States is a large meal, generally centered around a large roasted turkey. A very similar dinner is often served on Christmas and New Year's Day. Turkey isn't all that rich in tryptophan, the chemical linked to sleepiness after eating turkey. But eating a big, decadent meal can cause sleepiness, even if turkey isn't on the menu. A whole turkey is quite expensive but you can buy few slices and research on recipes perfect for small gatherings. A fresh turkey is more expensive than a frozen turkey because of special handling requirements. Fresh turkeys cannot remain in a food store for as long as frozen turkeys. They are convenient to use because they do not require thawing. If you are able to allow for the time required for thawing, frozen turkeys provide the same flavor and quality as fresh turkeys.
