What is the best dosage to take for vitamin c daily. When I am run down I take around 5000 a day mg is that too much?
It does help get rid of a cold fast when I do that though.

Vitamin C has to be considered in two-fold rationale:

[1] Acute dosing: How much Vitamin C (water-soluble) at one time

[2] Cummulative dosing: How much over the day total

IF you consume too much vitamin C (as ascorbic acid or a salt therof), it can actually play the role of PRO-oxidant, rather than ANTI-oxidant. For most body types, there seems to be a sufficient dosing recommendation at any one time of 500mg.

So, 500mg at any one time...how about over the course of the day?

Well - in order to answer this, you must understand that cummulative effects will be based on body size (something known as volume of distribution in the pharmaceutical world). 3000mg or 3 grams in a 115 pound woman is NOT the same as 3 grams in a 200-pound man.

That said, a general rule of thumb for daily averages would probably be somewhere along the lines of this (if using Linus Pauling's Orthomolecular Dosing parameters as a guideline):

100-150 lbs. 2500mg
151-180 lbs. 3000mg
181-200 lbs. 3500mg
201-220 lbs. 4000mg
221-240 lbs. 4500mg
241-260 lbs. 5000mg
> 260 lbs. May/May not be worth adding on to that number.

Now, in an acute condition with high levels of oxidative stress (i.e. - the colds you mention), there certainly is some merit to upping that dose to probably about 1.5 - 2 times the dose, but generally, there is probably little evidence to support this as chronic need.

Wow, that's so interesting! I didn't think that you'd need anywhere near as much as that. Now I need to rethink my vitamin C intake! Thanks.

I usually drink two glasses of Orange Juice every morning. How far does that get me along with Vitamin C for the daily requirements?

Is this a serious question? Dr. Houser just posted what the requirements are above, so look on your orange juice label and see how much vitamin C is in each glass and do the math. Wallah!

Let's let the doctor respond to more serious (and less lazy peopled) posts. No offense, just telling it the way it is. tongue wink

Well, first off - can you tell me how much Vitamin C is in your organge juice?

Vitamin C is one of 4 nutrients required on every food label alongside:
[1] Calcium
[2] Iron
[3] Vitamin A

You'll see it listed as a percentage based on a 2,000 cal diet - so the number can also move up and/or down dependent on how heavy or skinny you are.

Now, rationale for the requirement of listing those 4 nutrients (and sheer completion's sake) oftentimes follows particular disease-states being induced when deficient:

Deficient Vitamin C = Scurvy
Deficient Iron = Anemia (most often females)
Deficient Calcium = Osteoporosis (but this is tricky which we may get to later on with you guys)
Deficient Vitamin A = opthalmalogic issues (most notably blidness and night vision loss...of course this too can be problematic for pregnant females if in excess for a condition known as Phocomelia to the baby, but that is beyond the scope here).

So - to summarize,

What is your body weight (if you don't mind me asking)?

What percentage of Vitamin C is listed on the 2,000 cal diet?

Anyone know what harbors more Vitamin C than Citrus Fruits????

PEPPERS

(Pure nutritional trivia for you wink )

Well, I can see where you'll be type-cast here. HA! I like the fiesty ones; evey online forum's got em.

We'll put it this way...I am highly tolerant in my position. I say ask away - I kind of teeter on the side of the only stupid question is the one's literally left unasked. Some may agree and others disagree with that mantra - but I taught for a few years as well in a previous life. HA! You get some interesting stuff I'm sure you can imagine.

But really, thanks for hopping aboard - looking forward to interactions with you for sure.

May I suggest the best supplement for you is another alarm clock?

Really - while that sounds potentially sarcastic, I mean it in an almost serious tone. 10 minutes at best to set it to get up and have the appropriate meal is probably most in order than taking 100 extra pills filled with filler, et al...

Not to suggest I am adverse to supplementing an adequate diet by any stretch - in fact I do consulting work with such cases in my spare time (7,200+ of them to be exact). Sometimes the most appropriate therapy is behavioral modification. In this case, I ask for but 10 minutes of your time.

Your best bet? Take 1000 mg 3 x daily one in the am, one in the afternoon and one at night.
Ask any nutritionist that's highly certified or medical expert and they will tell you on average the same thing.

Anything more than that can't properly be absorbed by the body.

From Dr Houser's first post in this thread:
