I love Hamsters (as you can tell LOL) but I have never owned one before. I am thinking of buying one when I move to my new apartment- any tips on how to keep them healthy?

Thats really great that you are planning to get a hamster. I love them too, myself. They are so cute, fluffy and have big eyes and pouches to match. Just a spot of advice- please adopt one from a rescue group rather than buying from a pet store or breeder.

Haven't had one myself either, but have heard that you shouldn't disturb a hamster that is asleep or else it can get sick. Also, hamsters are nocturnal which means that you will have to play with them in the evening or night.

I have a hamster. He is kept in a vivarium instead of a normal cage. It is bigger and gives him a lot more room to move around. The floor is covered with wood shavings (not cedar wood) and he has a wheel to keep him entertained. I also have one of the plastic balls for him to run around in to get some exercise. He eats seeds, fruit and mixed food from the local pet shop. We have to keep him out of sunlight so he doesn't get too hot, but the room needs to be kept at a comfortable temperature.

Try to avoid giving a hamster Iceberg lettuce as it has little value nutritionally and can also cause liver problems if eaten to excess.

Hamsters like to burrow so if possible try and give them an environment with lots of tubes and tunnels, they will love it!

or those who wants to take hamster as their pet do not tkae those dwarf like hamsters. Take the normal ones. Because studies shows it is not good for children to hold and play with them. It gets easily irritated and they can bite your children.

It is bad to mix different breeds of hamsters. When you mix big hamster to dwarf hamster, the big one will kill the dwarf hamster even though they have different gender.

The best breed of hamster to breed is the Syrian type. They are fun and sweet type of hamster by they are the jealous type one also. They don’t like to share the cage with another Syrian hamster they will tend to kill each other.

I once have a hamster and the breed was the teddy bear ones. They are really cute but their life expectancy seems to be not that long.

Did you know their age when you started to breed them?

I don’t even know what age when I got my hamsters. I forgot to ask the people in the pet shop where I bought them.

Also those people who are selling hamsters don’t know exactly the age of these rodents. As long as you know how to take care of them that will be enough even if you don’t know what their age is.

It’s not all the people in the pet shops don’t know what they are selling. For hamster, you can definitely determine which the teddy bear bread is and not. Teddy bear hamsters are big and fat rather than the small ones.

It’s not that hard. The only difficult time you will encounter is when the female hamster gives birth.

The problem is that hamster and other rodent cannot leave with each other. I advice you to put them on a seperate cage so that they could leave for a longer time.
