An Apgar score is done for babies for the first 1, 5, and 10 minutes of his life. This monitors the well-being of the baby. Apgar actually stands for the things that you need to check on the newborn:
A - activity (muscle tone)
P - pulse (heart rate)
G - grimace (reflex irritability)
A - appearance (skin color)
R - respiration (breathing rate)
The highest score for each aspect is 2, the lowest is 0. Generally, a baby which has a score of 7 and above during the 1st minute of life is considered healthy. Less than that, and the baby is considered to be in moderate or severe distress; proper action must be taken.
