Lithium is used for bipolar disorders, but it is monitored closely for toxicity. How do you know that lithium has reached toxic levels in the body and what do you do if ever?

Lithium therapy requires reaching plasma concentrations of lithium which are close to the toxic concentration. Lithium is mainly excreted by the kidney; so adequate renal function and adequate salt and fluid intake are essential in order to avoid lithium accumulation and intoxication. So, it is essential for the patient to maintain a normal diet including adequate salt and fluid intake during lithium therapy.

There are visible symptoms of lithium toxicity, so you need to recognize these symptoms and stop lithium intake at once. Mild symptoms include diarrhea, thirst, vomiting, muscle weakness, drowsiness, mild shakiness, frequent urination, and coordination problems. Severe symptoms are blurred vision, giddiness, ringing in the ears, seizures, and severe shakiness. When you encounter any of these symptoms, STOP lithium intake at once and report these to the doctor.

Lithium is a form of toxin that was developed to use for bi-polar disease and it is not a form of radiation. It still can kill people if you over use it. You have to maintain at least 0.6-1.0 mmol/L of lithium for medication for patients that have bi-polar diseases.
