Hi Dr. Houser,

I read the eBook and I am excited to get started. But my question is how will my SMOKING (aside from the obvious health hazzards) affect my workouts? I know I will get winded quicker. Anything else?

Thanks,
Mike

Everyone has the ability to stop smoking; they first must make that decision. Some smokers will need medications; nearly all will need encouragement from family or friends. Some will need the psychological support from health care professionals. Some will take smoking cessation classes, or get hypnotized, or use anti-smoking devices. It really doesn't matter how you chose to stop. As far as cigarettes are concerned, it should be gone for good.

No matter what your age or shape, you should exercise daily. Not only does exercise tone your body so you can wear your favorite jeans, it strengthens your muscles, keeps your bones strong, and improves your skin. And there are more benefits of exercise, increased relaxation, better sleep and mood, strong immune function, and more.

Hello Mike,

What a peculiar question. I presume you would take part in a plan such as BodyPRIME to achieve one of two things:

[1] Better Overall health status

and/or

[2] Better Body Composition

You may see starting the program as the start to kicking the smoking habit, but I remain unsure if this is something you are prepared to do at this time (considering your suggestion of "aside from the obvious health hazzards").

That said, I am truly unsure. sorry

The diet part of the program may actually improve your overall blood lipid (cholesterol) levels. However, the smoking may certainly eliminate the benefit because smoking increases the bad levels of cholesterol while lowering the good.

The training portion may be more difficult to accomplish (probably not more than you get winded already secondary to your smoking), though I am uncertain I am am concerned about performance as exercise can likely too aid your cardiovascular status - that said, only your own physician knows your case well and all of your health issues (if any). I would certainly proceed with caution if you desire to continue to smoke and ask your primary care physician about it first. Feel free to show the plan to your primary care physician and I would be willing to discuss your case with him/her as necessary.

Can we go on a diet plan even though that we are still smoking? Is there any effect on the diet plan?

For smokers, I suggest that you need to do cardio exercises rather than weightlifting. You need to get your stamina by doing cardio and work on your breathing exercises.

You must first quit smoking before you go to a sports and exercise activity. If you are still smoking and want to do physical fitness, most instructors give them advices on how to stop smoking and exercises suitable for them.

Try to cut down on the number of cigarettes. This will help gradually in decreasing your smoking consumption until you quit.

I know this is hard for smokers but I have a friend who overcome smoking. He lessen his cigarette consumption and focus on jogging and going to the gym.
