yes! it is EXCELLENT for weight loss. karate is generally anaerobic , except when you spar, and then it is very aerobic. strength training and muscle building are naturally included too.tkd is excellent for weight loss due to the large amount of kicks. you should try out free classes at several different schools in your area, then pick the one you had the most fun and felt more comfortable at. you will stick with something you enjoy longer.

I think you have made a great decision to take up martial arts. If you stick to it, it will change your life in more ways than weight loss.If you are already on the heavy side, some of the "cardio kick boxing" classes may be a little too "high impact" on your knees and joints. These classes can also be a little intimidating if you've never done martial arts. I suggest that you find a place that has an instructor you like, a place that is close enough for you to go at least 2-3 times per week, and place were you feel comfortable. If you find those criteria, then the "style" (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu) won't really matter. Most places will offer you a trial for one free class, or a a couple of weeks for a small fee. Feel free to try them out.

A big part of using any martial art for weight loss is how hard you train. The best excersise program in the world will not work if you don't commit to it and give 110% when you are there. Martial arts also need to be practised at home to become really good. I commend you for wanting to start and feel that any good traditional style has a lot more benefits than just weight loss. Find one with an instructor you like and have fun.
