Decongestants are used for nasal congestion. They are only recommended for short-term use since it loses its effectiveness in the long run. Moreover, they can cause high blood pressure, so decongestants must be used with caution by hypertensives.

Decongestants work by reducing swelling of the mucous membranes in the nasal passages. If you have a simple sinus infection, your health care provider may recommend treatment with decongestants. Use of nonprescription decongestant nasal drops or sprays may also be effective in controlling symptoms. However, these medicines should not be used beyond their recommended use, usually four to five days, or they may actually increase congestion.

Decongestants are primarily used to make breathing easier by shrinking swollen mucous membranes in the nose, allowing free air passage. They also help relieve runny and stuffy nose and postnasal drip, which can cause a sore throat.

In such medicines for colds and coughs it has this decongestant. But if you have a high blood pressure or if you are hypertensive chances are you'll be getting a high blood pressure. So for the best its better to consult your doctor.

Recent study of FDA shows that decongestant is not advisable for people who have hypertension and heart problems. Several decongestants have PPA or phenylpropanolamine that treats the cold and cough but can trigger high blood pressure.

Yes, it can affect the person with heart condition. In a recent FDA research, it shows that this is the main side effect of decongestant. Most doctors give alternative or herbal medicine for colds and flu if they have heart condition.

That’s why I don’t take decongestant whenever I have colds or flu. I just take a rest, eat hot chicken soup and drink lots of water.

I always take decongestant whenever I have cold and flu. In the information I got from the posters really change my mind. We have hypertension running in our family and I would like to avoid taking this.
