Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus. HBV can cause a wide spectrum of symptoms ranging from general malaise to chronic liver disease that can lead to liver cancer.

The hepatitis B virus spreads through:

- infected body fluids, such as blood, saliva, semen, vaginal fluids, tears, and urine
- a contaminated blood transfusion (uncommon in the United States)
- shared contaminated needles or syringes for injecting drugs
- sexual activity with an HBV-infected person
- transmission from HBV-infected mothers to their newborn babies

Transfusion of blood is not without risks. The most important hazard of blood transfusion is the risk of transmission of blood-borne infections. A knowledge of the infectious agents, with special emphasis on the diseases endemic in a particular region, is essential in understanding the strategies to prevent the transmission of these infections.

Provision of safe blood is of paramount importance and its responsibility lies solely with the blood transfusion service.

No, Not here as the blood is always tested before you can receive a transfusion. Have no idea how it is done in other countries though

Yes, there is a possibility of getting Hepa B from blood transfusions. That's why it's very important to implement stringent measures for screening donors. Also, health care workers need to be very careful in handling blood, since they can also be at risk for blood-borne infections. In blood transfusions, it is important to check the physical characteristics of the blood being transfused; it should look like normal blood, dark red in color, not greenish-tinged or pink-tinged, no clots. In such cases, blood must be returned to the blood bank.

You can also get hepatitis virus when ever you have direct contact to a person. For example, you used the spoon and fork of the person who has hepatitis or sharing food with that person. You will have 100% chance in getting hepatitis virus by direct contact.

That’s why my mother separates m brother’s things when he got hepatitis. I knew that you can get this by blood transfusion or eating street foods.

It’s very difficult if you have hepatitis. You are secluded from your family members. I’m trying to avoid this as much as possible. I’ve now eliminated street food on my menu.

You need to watch what you are eating. Avoid eating at public places where people are sharing on one dish of sauce or dip. You are exposed to a high risk of getting viral diseases.

This is a specific disease of the liver. The liver acts as a filtration on the food that we eat much like a kidney. When we eat food that is contaminated with germs then it could be a risk on getting hepatitis.

You see this is a virus that affects the liver. We can get this virus thru blood transfusion if the blood is already contaminated with hepatitis B virus.
