Hi,
In my effort to eat healthy, I have been keeping off sweets and ice creams. I love ice creams and have been craving it for some time now.
I would like to hear if you know any options of healthy icecreams.... what is better frozen yogurt or gelato?

I will suggest frozen yogurt, although not exactly ice cream but as good as ice cream - they are very similar in terms of flavor and texture. It is a low-fat or fat-free alternative to ice cream.

Keep off the Ice cream, and try the Haagen Dazs raspberry SORBET with a sprinkling of fresh blueberries on top. Its a great dessert, and will satisfying your sweet tooth, trust me.

nigelsf - 19 August 2008 04:38 AM Hi,

Gelato is Italian ice cream. Basically, the ingredients are the same - what makes it different from your regular ice cream is the way they are processed, so I don't see a reason why it can be a healthier substitute to ice cream.
Any thoughts?

Banana Split or Buttered Pecan or Country Vanilla from Blue Bell. They claim its Low fat and No extra sugar added, but trust me they are too good, and if you are worried about the health, get their pint size.

As long as you control your portions, i don't think a little indulgence every now and then is a problem.

I totally agree. I really love ice cream and I used to eat it every other day but when I decided to start eating healthy, I knew I had to stop. But I still indulge once a month because it is also important to treat yourself every once in a while. Yogurt and sorbet just doesn't do it for me. Haha

This isn't exactly ice cream but someone gave this "Healthy Ice Cream" recipe to me. It's more of a frozen yogurt recipe than an ice cream, actually. It came from an old issue of Cooking Light magazine.
Pineapple-Brown Sugar Frozen Yogurt
1-1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
2 (15-1/4 oz.) cans crushed pineapple in juice, undrained
4 cups vanilla low-fat yogurt
2 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine the sugar and pineapple in a medium saucepan over medium heat, and cook until sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat, and cool slightly. Chill.
Combine pineapple mixture, yogurt, and vanilla in a large bowl.
Pour the mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer and freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. Spoon yogurt into a freezer-safe container; cover and freeze 1 hour or until firm.

Yogurt is considered a healthy ice cream. There are also products out in the market that are marked as reduced fat and sugar is also healthy.

Yes, we can get cholesterol when we eat ice cream. The milk content of ice cream has fat. When the fats are induced inside our body, cholesterol is being produced after digestion.

That's what I thought too, but when I was in Italy, I tried to find out why it's creamier than our usual Ben & Jerry's. Gelato has more full cream milk on it than the American ice cream - which gives it the richer taste. The downside? It has 5% more fat. :(

I just discovered something that is worth sharing - TOFU ICE CREAM! Oh, well, it's not literally tofu. It's ice cream that, instead of having cow's milk as main ingredient, it is made from soy milk.

So let’s go for yogurt. American and gelato have more fats than yogurt. Yogurt has good bacteria called prebiotics and probiotics which help digest the food we eat.

Like princess25, I've recently become a fan of soy ice cream. Aside from the healthy reasons as nigelsf implied, there is another reason - if you are lactose intolerant like me, then it saves you from belching too much gas.

Not really very hard to find in North America - they're available in most organic stores and high-end supermarkets.
