Can red wine actually help you to live longer? Has this been proven scientifically?

I saw a tv show... something like 20/20, i dont remember for sure, and they were talking about a chemical in red wine making people live longer by decreasing their risks of certain diseases. They were trying to isolate the chemical that does this in red wine and bring it to market. Should be very interesting. Science is really taking off right now.

It's been proven by research that drinking moderate red wine has cardiovascular benefits, including reducing production o "bad" cholesterol or LDLs, increasing production of "good" cholesterol or HDLs, and reducing blood clotting. It is also said to have a favorable influence on your lipid profiles. Indeed, very interesting findings for alcohol aficionados.

I believe that chemical is call Resveratrol. Sometimes you will see it called Trans-Resveratrol and an accompanying percent, such as Trans-Resveratrol 50% 1000mg. What this means is that you were really getting 500mg of the chemical per dose. Keep in mind that most of the studies done have shown that you need to have an effective dosage of around 2-4g/day, depending on bodyweight. And it starts to get pretty expensive at those levels. And a glass of red wine gets you no where near those levels.
Dr. Houser would probably tell you that you should be cautious with this substance, especially since it has some interesting properties with respect to estrogen receptors in the male body particularly.

This can get over my head real quick, but basically there are 2 types of estrogen receptors (alpha and beta) and trans-resveratrol acts as an antagonist (good) on one type and an agonist (bad) on the other. For men you really don't want a "bunch" of estrogenic substances running around, and women should be wary of this as well, as that is starting to be implicated in breast cancer.
This is all without even talking about the effects of alcohol on the liver and the impairment that brings forth in the bodies ability to clear byproducts and excess hormones, such as estrogen metabolites.

Resvaratol is an anti-oxidant - this can be found in the seeds and skin of grapes. Other dark fruits, such as blueberries, also contain a similar amount of Resveratrol.
Here's some that I've gathered:
Muscadine grapes: more than 40 mg/l
Pinot Noir: .40-2.0
Spanish Red wines: 1.92-12.58
Red wines (global): 1.98-7.13

Is drinking wine good or bad if it is just a cpl of glasses every evening. Some people have told me it is good for health but others say it will make me an alcoholic. Which side do i believe?

I have read that a glass of wine may be good in many ways. It helps the liver and the heart. So go on and have a drink without guilt. It becomes a case for addiction or abuse only when it gets uncontrollable and rules your life.

So far, I haven't heard of anyone turning alcoholic over wine since it's not really that addictive. And it is good for your heart, a glass a day is just about right

It was researched that white and red wine are good for our body. Just a glass each day, would help the body detoxify because of anti-oxidants present on wines.

Wine is also used for cooking. Wine has a distinct flavor that can be added to some recipe. Don’t worry about the alcohol content, it will be burned off when it’s cook.
