My Jack Russell is awful when it comes to flea season, but I find all the lotions and potions are not very effective at ridding him of these pests. Does anyone know of anything I would find in the home already that I could use to get rid of the fleas?

Regular grooming can also eliminate fleas without chemicals. Use a fine comb and go through your pet's hair - you can easily get rid of fleas this way naturally, and while it won't get them all, you'll spend quality time with your pet. With some pets, it may actually be a good idea to trim their fur.

A friend of mine uses citrus fruits such as lemon and limes (sometimes grapefruit) to rid her dog of fleas. She squeezes out the juice, put the rinds on to boil slowly for two hours, mushes the rinds up when they go squishy. She takes the liquid from this process and simmers for 2 hours. Allow to cool. You can add this to your dog's bath, or spray on directly to the fur. She says it can also be frozen for future use.
HTH.

What I am thinking is, if it is that worst (because you said that you have tried all "lotions and potions" but they don't help), then why don't you consult your veterinarian? Normally, fleas go away with topical cure.

What you need to treat is actually your house, soft furniture and carpet... You have to worry about the eggs (getting rid of and eliminating them).
Think: FUMIGATION.

I agree with Jim2008, to isolate the outbreak you have to treat the house as well as the pet.

I'll share a funny story. My friend has been complaining of itching after she saw a flea on her. She reacted horribly and thought that she is infested with fleas, taking a bath every time she gets the chance. :D
Apparently, fleas don't live on humans. I told her it was psychological, or something else and told her to see a dermatologist. :D

You can use these treatment I posted here to remove fleas from your dog. You can try to bath the dog with a shampoo of your choice and let the suds/lather sit on the dog for about 5 minutes...this will tend to starve fleas of air. It may not get all of the fleas but it should make a serious dent.

Yes fleas can only survive with dogs not in humans. But is there an effecitve way to zero out the fleas on dogs? does playing outside on the front yard also cause fleas for dogs?

I don't know if this is a myth, but can you remove fleas from your dogs by giving by bathing them with hypo allergenic soap.

Better to consult your vet if you can give your pet's hypo-allergenic soap. It might affect your pet's skin if you don't have proper guidance from a professional.

There are several medicines for fleas and one of them is on a capsule form called Comfortis. They are very effective for dogs and cats but be sure bathing them regularly to prevent fleas to come back.

I have read this on the internet and haven’t tried it people say Dawn detergent soap is best to remove fleas. Dog shampoos are not that accurate to remove fleas and they say that just soak it to your pet for 5 minutes and rinse it off.

That’s new to me (detergent soap for fleas). I’m going to ask my vet if this is possible.

Are you serious detergent soap for removing fleas? I should ask my dogs vet for this type of treatment.

I have talked to my vet and she said it could only worsen my pet’s condition. Just a warning, everything we read and see in the internet are not real. We should ask a professional to guide us on taking care of our pets.

It’s very new to me. I have read that kerosene can remove fleas from the dogs. I went on thinking kerosene? It might poison my pet... kerosene is a gas and when a dogs drink this, it might kill them.

That is also a new thing for me. Well even so, I would not still try to bathe my pet with detergent soap.

Yes, this can be fatal for your dog. Don’t assume things that can be good for your pets.
