Hello, many of friends go to the gym to build muscles. I suggest them not to do that alone, but to do a 'sport'/phisical activity in addition to building muscles at the gym. My view is that muscles should be built for a 'sporty' body that needs them. Sort of that. What is your view, and any scientific answer?

Hello Ramesh, I also think like you. When I used to swim, having strong muscles helped me and actually part of the training included a weights lifting session once a week. I could swim faster then. But someone who just does weights lifting is just 'filling a balloon' with short-term effects. His heart (beat rate) may not be able to handle that additional weight, and strength!

Actually muscles are 'moving' all the time by themselves. The reason your muscles are 'still' during the day is becuase they are 'acting' to be like that. This might mean that muscles are naturally doing so activity by themselves. Also in the gym you do move them, as the way to build them is by moving them.

There's no point to having big muscles if you're not going to do anything with them! You're not going to get the cardiovascular benefits from weightlifting alone. I don't actually know what Sarmilla is getting at- they don't "move" by themselves!

What exactly do you mean by other physical activity. Weight lifting itself is a tough physical activity. There is hardly any energy left to do other physical activity for a weight lifter. I've observed weightlifters mostly interested in lifting weights. They hardly do any other exercise except light jogging.

Yes there is:
1. Look good naked
2. Protection

Really? I bet my bloodwork would prove you wrong as I havent done ANY cardiovascular exercises (ie treadmill, eliptical..etc) in well over 1 year......Through weightlifting alone I have been able to maintain a pretty good fitness level....I would say that lifting at a High Intensity (read as close to your 1 Rep Max as possible) along with the proper rest intervals one will have a pretty taxing cardiovascular workout...

Okay, g-lee - I have to agree, but if you're looking that good naked, you're probably doing SOMETHING with your muscles, eh? : )

Yes i agree with Aayus. Be more active in sports because it will define the growth of your muscle. In the gym you have to do all kinds of exercise and target only 1 to 2 muscles, but with sports and physical activities, all of your muscles will be working. When I used to play competitive basketball I only do weights in the gym 2x a week and I dont go on heavy weights, maybe just a little, but more repetitons.

Why does sports athletes only do 1 set of 4 repetitions on their gym work out?

They are already involved in sports activities. They do only a couple of weight training because they are not required to build big muscles they only need to define their body.

It’s better to have a sport activity when you go to the gym. You can think of just jogging or playing tennis because these sports will be your cardio exercises.
