Review: Colonic Irrigation
  Customer Rating: Potentially Dangerous
The benefits from proper colon cleansing using a recommended and tested colon cleansing product must not be overlooked. However, colonic irrigation can be an unsafe procedure that is very invasive – requiring the use of hoses and many gallons of water that is treated with components that might be unsafe for certain individuals.
Although the benefits of cleansing the colon can be reaped by nearly all individuals, colonic irrigation in particular is useful only for those individuals who are constipated – and the results that are produced with colonic irrigation are no better than any common, over-the-counter stool softener. The risks associated with colonic irrigation far outweigh this easily-obtained benefit.

Perhaps one of the biggest dangers of colonic irrigation is its lack of regulation. Colonic irrigation is not recognized as a valid medical procedure by the government. Those who administer colonic irrigation are not licensed as there is no licensing body for the procedure. Those who perform colonic irrigation are not required to be trained to do so, leaving the door open for nearly anyone to open up shop and start making money by providing the service.
The equipment that is used during colonic irrigation is not required by any regulatory body to be inspected for safety or sanitation (although the FDA does regulate the production of such equipment). The herbs and other ingredients that are introduced into the body during colonic irrigation are unregulated by any governmental standards.
Another severe problem associated with colonic irrigation is the risk of infection. Improperly sterilized colonic irrigation equipment can allow the transfer of germs from one person to the next. This phenomenon could lead to the transfer of potentially fatal diseases like Hepatitis C and AIDS. There is also a risk of deadly amoebic infection among those who practice colonic irrigation.
Those who undergo colonic irrigation are also at risk of electrolyte imbalance. An imbalance of electrolytes within the body can lead to severe and fatal cardiac problems and conditions, including heart failure and heart attack – often ending in death. Colonic irrigation is a very uncomfortable procedure. The tube that is used to administer colonic irrigation causes discomfort and cramping during the procedure.
Licensed gastroenterologists will avoid performing similar invasive (but lifesaving) diagnostic procedures like colonoscopies unless completely necessary because of the pain that is caused during the procedure, and usually provide mild sedation for those who do have a colonoscopy.

While there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that colon cleansing is beneficial – colon cleansing via colonic irrigation has no proven benefits, although it does have many documented harmful side effects.
It is suggestible that those wishing to reap the benefits of colon cleansing should look to proven colon cleansing programs that have been tested by reputable members of the medical community in lieu of dangerous colonic irrigation.
