Review: Colon Hydrotherapy
  Rating: Potentially Dangerous

colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy (also known as colonic irrigation) is usually thought of as an alternative medical therapy and is intended to remove fecal matter, toxins, parasites, and other substances from the intestinal tract and the colon. Colon hydrotherapy involves injecting water that is usually mixed with herbs into the colon using colon special equipment.

Those who market colon hydrotherapy services claim that colon hydrotherapy through irrigation will also remove impaction, parasites, and intestinal flatus (gas) from the intestinal tract. Unfortunately, recent events suggest that the procedure may be more harmful than beneficial; in fact, no benefits have ever been clinically shown.

Colon Hydrotherapy Can Be Harmful

It has long been known that certain forms of colon cleansing provides many wonderful health benefits, but colon hydrotherapy in particular may cross the boundaries between what is safe and harmful. Colon hydrotherapy may disrupt the balance of bacteria and natural chemicals in the bowel region, and may even interfere with the colon’s natural ability to rid itself of dead cells.

Colon hydrotherapy can also pose serious and immediate health risks. There have been instances of gastrointestinal perforation reported from colon hydrotherapy. Gastrointestinal perforation is a perforation that passes through the entire wall of the stomach, large intestine or large bowel, and constitutes a medical emergency.

Although rare, the cases of gastrointestinal perforation resulting from improper use or misuse of equipment during a colon hydrotherapy procedure can result in death or lifelong negative implications for health. There have also been documented reports of amoebic infection following colon hydrotherapy that resulted from the use of improperly sterilized equipment during the procedure.

There are other dire maladies associated with the use of colon hydrotherapy. Excessive or repetitive use of enema preparations, including those used in colon hydrotherapy has been associated with such cardiac conditions as heart failure and myocardial infarction by causing an electrolyte imbalance within the body. Colon hydrotherapy can also lead to dependence upon the procedure in order to have a proper bowel movement. Those who are on prescription medication may find that their prescribed drug therapy is ineffective or interrupted when participating in colon hydrotherapy, which can be dangerous for those on life-sustaining medications for the heart, blood pressure, thyroid, and other conditions.

Colon Hydrotherapy is NOT Well Regulated

Although the USFDA regulates the production of the actual equipment that is used for colon hydrotherapy, it does not regulate the herbs or other ingredients that are administered during the procedure. Some ingredients in colon hydrotherapy preparations that are introduced into the colon have been linked to harmful or even fatal side effects in the person receiving the procedure.

For instance, some colon hydrotherapy providers use coffee in the enema preparation that is piped through the colon. This has been shown, in certain instances, to cause heart attack in the person receiving the procedure. Suppliers and manufacturers of colon hydrotherapy equipment have received several letters of warning from the FDA regarding the false claims that they often make regarding the safety and effectiveness of colon hydrotherapy.
